چکیده

We asked 169 participants to spontaneously categorize nine sets of items. A category structure was assumed to be more intuitive if a large number of participants consistently produced the same classification. Our results provide a rich empirical framework for examining models of unsupervised categorization—and illustrate a corresponding profound modeling challenge. We provide a preliminary examination comparing two models of unsupervised categorization: SUSTAIN (Love, Medin, & Gureckis, 2004) and the simplicity model (Pothos & Chater, 2002), and identify some ways in which the models have to be extended.

Predicting category intuitiveness with the rational model, the simplicity model, and the generalized context model.

Naïve observers typically perceive some groupings for a set of stimuli as more intuitive than others. The problem of predicting category intuitiveness has been historically considered the remit of models of unsupervised categorization. In contrast, this article develops a measure of category intuitiveness from one of the most widely supported models of supervised categorization, the generalized...

Measuring category intuitiveness in unconstrained categorization tasks.

What makes a category seem natural or intuitive? In this paper, an unsupervised categorization task was employed to examine observer agreement concerning the categorization of nine different stimulus sets. The stimulus sets were designed to capture different intuitions about classification structure. The main empirical index of category intuitiveness was the frequency of the preferred classific...

Bubbleworld Builder - 3D Modeling using Two-touch and Sketch Interaction

Commercial 3D modeling applications tend to be difficult and time consuming to use due to complex interfaces and functionality. In this paper we present a simple and intuitive interface for modeling “blobby” 3D objects using touch input. Objects are defined by sketching and modifying contours of cross-sectional slices. Two-touch interactions are used to zoom, rotate and slice the object. The re...

Heterogeneous object modeling: A review

A review on the recent development in heterogeneous object modeling is provided in this paper. General problems and prevalent solutions to the modeling of heterogeneous objects are investigated. Vigorous heterogeneous object representations are roughly classified into three major categories: evaluated models, unevaluated models and composite models. We reveal their similarities and study their ...

Towards an account of intuitiveness

Intuitive systems are usable systems. Design guidelines advocate intuitiveness and vendors claim it – but what does it mean for a user interface, interactive system or device to be intuitive? A review of the use of the term “intuitive” indicates that it has two distinct but overlapping meanings, namely intuitiveness based on familiarity and intuitiveness reflecting our embodiment (and frequentl...
